Several notations coexist. Everyday writing uses UTC+5 or the older GMT+5, which in casual use mean the same thing. The formal ISO 8601 standard writes offsets attached to times as ±hh:mm — 14:30+05:00, or 09:00−08:00 — and reserves the letter Z for UTC itself, so 12:00Z is noon universal time, the “Zulu” of aviation. Mastering the notation pays off in one habit: whenever a time crosses a border, write the offset or the city beside it. Five extra characters — +05:00, or (Karachi) — have prevented more missed meetings than any calendar feature ever shipped.
